We’d like to extend our congratulations to Old Owenian, Patrick Elwood, who has been selected for this year’s Cambridge Men’s Boat Race Squad. The training has been a huge commitment on top of his studies, taking up 6-7 hours a day 6 days a week.

The Cancer Research UK Boat Races will be held this Saturday 24th March and we wish Patrick (2nd from the back in the photo) the very best of luck!

Stunning Success at the Mid-Somerset Choral Festival!

We are delighted that four choirs from Owens were again invited to participate in the Mid Somerset Choral Festival, which was held in Bath on Wednesday 14th March.

Representing the school in the competition were the Junior Chamber Choir, the Close Harmony Group, the Senior Mixed Choir and the Senior Chamber Choir. All the choirs were awarded either a Distinction or Outstanding mark in their respective classes, which meant they were judged to have performed with an excellent level of technical ability and artistry.

After some tense moments waiting for the results to be announced and some very close decisions, Junior Chamber Choir were thrilled to be placed a very well-deserved 2nd overall in their class, having competed against six other choirs. More success then followed, with fantastic results for the Close Harmony Group, Senior Mixed Choir and Senior Chamber Choir, who were all placed 1st, and awarded winners’ trophies.

The adjudicator was full of praise for the impressive quality of choral work that all four choirs displayed, with particular mention made of the warmth, blend and accuracy of singing throughout. We are so proud of all of our choristers who came on the trip to Bath, it was a wonderful day which was enjoyed by everyone, made even better by the hoard of silverware that returned with us!

Huge congratulations to all members of the choirs for their brilliant performances, to Ms Jenkins, Ms Makepeace-Lott and Mr Werner for their superb choral direction, to Mr Thompson for his unparalleled accompanying skills, and to Ms Meik and Mrs Fosh for their fantastic support on the trip.

Year 12 student wins String Recital!

We are delighted to report that Year 12 student, Robin Day, won first prize in the ‘String Recital 15-18 years Grade 8 and over’ class at the North London Festival of Music, Speech and Drama on Sunday 11th March. The adjudicator, Hilary Sturt, summed up: “It was wonderful to hear you play today, a really special musician communicating through the violin. Bravo”.

Congratulations Robin on this wonderful achievement!
