Art Success!

The art department was thrilled to learn that the work of two Year 12 students, Lauren Britten and Sophie Lloyd, was successfully shortlisted and commended for the Royal Academy A-Level Summer Exhibition Online 2018. Their work titled, ‘Reflect’ and ‘Twisted Thought’ respectively, was selected from over 2,000 submissions and judged by an expert panel. This online exhibition is held to coincide with the world’s largest open-entry exhibition, the RA Summer Exhibition, which is currently celebrating its 250th year.

Many congratulations to Lauren and Sophie pictured above with a selection of their artwork alongside their commended pieces.

Ski Sunday 2018!

It has become the custom for the Owen’s Ski Race Team to spend the hottest day of the year on the ski slopes in Welwyn Garden City competing in the ‘London Schools Ski Race’ competition and Sunday 24th June was no exception! The students really impressed with their hard work and results against the best ski teams in the country. Gaia Siddle and Marlene Bucher were racing for the first time and showed great determination with their racing.

The Under 16 boys did especially well as there were only 3 in the team and they all secured clean runs and came 4th overall.  The Under 14 boys came 5th, the Under 16 boys came 4th and the Under 16 girls came 8th.  These results show real promise for the regional qualifier in September.  Well done Skiers and many thanks to Mrs Wootton and Mrs Davighi for organising our involvement in this fantastic sport!

Year 12 Art Visit to Kew Gardens!

Many thanks to Miss. Veerayen for this report:

On Friday 22nd June 2018, our Year 12 art students visited Kew Gardens. The day proved extremely valuable as students were provided with the opportunity to draw directly from primary sources in support of their coursework project.

The trip was thoroughly enjoyed by all and it was wonderful to visit various attractions, in particular the Temperate House, which has recently opened after 5 years of restoration work. My thanks go to Mrs. Grigson for her support on the trip.

Year 7 and 8 annual R. F. Cholmeley Poetry Reading Competition!

Once again, students from Years 7 and 8 showcased their exceptional talents at this prestigious annual event. Two readers from each class entertained their peers with powerful poetic performances, many of which were composed by the students themselves. This year, we were fortunate enough to have Ash Dickinson, one of the UK’s best spoken word poets, as guest judge. He was impressed with the level of sensitivity and emotion in the poems and found the judging process a very difficult task.

The Year 7 competition was won by Evie Salama who performed ‘George’ by Hillaire Belloc and the Year 8 competition was won by Mollie Mardel with a poem called ‘Society’ written by herself. Congratulations to all contestants for their superb performances.

Ash Dickinson’s judging of the Poetry Reading contest was followed by a series of poetry workshops in the Library with students from Years 8 and 9. Ash performed some of his poems and then gave students brilliant ideas to help even the most reluctant poets to write poems of their own. Students at the workshop really enjoyed these inspirational and creative sessions.
