Library Department launches Illustration Competition!

To celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 2nd March 2017 and the 60th anniversary of the Cilip Kate Greenaway medal for illustration, the Library Department is holding a competition for illustration.

Students are encouraged to create an illustration for a book of their choice, or design a new book cover, even create a new picture book. The illustration could have a subject based spin and any media, including graphic design tools can be used so students do not necessarily need to be good artists, just have creative ideas. The closing date is Friday 17th March 2017. Please click on the flyer (to the left) for further details.

Year 13 students make it to the East of England Final of the Bank of England Economics Challenge!

Many thanks to Mr Rahul Mahajan, Teacher of Economics, for the following article:

Following on from a previous report (where we won our regional heat, knocking out QE Boys amongst others), our Target 2.0 team were one of seven schools which had made it through to the East of England final of this prestigious Bank of England Challenge.

Our team comprising of Callum Brooks (Captain), Tim Crook-Sycamore, Chloe Harris (Head of Research), Jack Larsson, Greg Young and Mimi Zhao,  created a formal presentation and delivered it to a panel of judges from the Bank of England. The presentation concluded with a recommendation on exactly what interest rate the team would set in order to achieve the UK government’s inflation target of 2.0% CPI. Moreover, recommendations on asset purchasing and forward guidance were offered and justified.

Following the initial presentation, which lasted 18 minutes at the regional final stage, the judges asked a range of difficult and probing questions on the presentation and the economy at large.

Our team fought a great fight but, alas, did not win the East of England Final. Judging competitions such as these is always fairly subjective, especially when it comes to the monetary policy decision. The team which won was, interestingly, the sole team which placed its neck on the block with the highly debatable decision to alter the Bank’s base rate.

Both Brewers’ Company schools (Dame Alice Owens and Aldenham) had made it through to the East of England Final, which is a pretty remarkable feat in and of itself. It was really fantastic that both sets of students gelled magnificently at the event. I sincerely hope that our respective sets of economists continue to meet each other socially, possibly at a future Brewers’ event.

After the event, I provided our team with a tour of a segment of the investment banking district in the City of London, including my two former places of work — one of which overlooked the now defunct Lehman Brothers!

We are proud of our outstanding students and would like to thank them for the work and effort put into this highly complex and stretching project over the last few months.
