29th January 2018

Holocaust Memorial Day 2018

Dame Alice Owens School were proud to be the host school for the annual Holocaust Memorial Day on Wednesday 24th January.

Many schools from across Hertfordshire attended and participated in the event and we are very grateful to all staff for preparing their students who were a credit to their schools.  The theme of this year’s event was the power of words and how language impacts on people’s lives. The pupils powerful performances have ensured that the message of the occasion will not be forgotten. The commemoration was live streamed to hundreds of additional students within Dame Alice Owen’s school allowing a wider reach to the key messages.

The event was recognised as the largest student commemoration in the UK and we were pleased to welcome senior representatives of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust. Our guest speaker Zigi Shipper gave a moving testimony of his life as a survivor of the Holocaust. As a child, he experienced several camps including Auschwitz-Birkenau. He was liberated after surviving a death march and came to England and he now dedicates his time to sharing his story and teaching the dangers of hatred.

In addition, there was a thought provoking shoe display which was based on the words of Primo Levi in his account of his experience in Auschwitz, and in particular The Ceremony of The Changing of The Shoes. It also brings to mind the piles of discarded shoes previously belonging to the victims of the gas chambers that can still be seen by visitors to Auschwitz today.

Senior Chamber Concert kicks off 2018 in style!

The Senior Chamber Concert, which took place on Wednesday 31st January, was a wonderful start to the Music Department’s exciting 2018 concert schedule.

The programme featured highly accomplished solo performances from individual upper school students:  Doraly Gill, Dylan Gunasekera, Megan Boulton, Neve Mayes, Isabel Jin, Alice Byrne, Romi Sharp, Jade Brooks, Lily Wood and Hannah Andrusier. There were also highly enjoyable ensemble performances from the Year 10 String Quartet, Horn Quartet, Advanced Flute Ensemble, Senior Clarinet Ensemble, Trombone Ensemble and the Year 12 String Quintet.

Our thanks to all those pupils who took part, to the musical directors (Mr Widden, Mr Thomas, Ms Huneke, Mr Crossley and Mr Bean), and to Ms Meik and Mr Werner for concert production and front of house.
