Dame Alice Owen’s alumni collect their Gold DofE Award!

12 past students and 2 current students collected their Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Awards on Wednesday 24th May at Buckingham Palace. Prince Edward presented their Awards. Congratulations to Amish Jethwa, Jasmin  Ranu, Harry Anderson, Emma McIntyre, Sophie Wilson,  Adam Ashing, Hannah Marie Burkett, Eleanor Wright, Amari Korpal, Caitlin Creeley, Sophie Hallums, Emma Page, Alva Murphy and Sarah Fishwick.

Miss Lord, Owen’s Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Co-ordinator also attended and said “I was proud to be there – students work really hard to achieve their award, juggling many activities as well as a challenging study programme in the Sixth Form”.

Mrs English, Owen’s Alumni Relations Manager, who supports the Gold participants, said, “ Miss Lord takes over 130 students through the Bronze Level each year, with about 30 going on to Gold – they build on skills learnt on local expeditions in Year 10 to taking expeditions in Wild Country in Year 12.”  She believes it’s the week long Residential trip at Gold Level only, which, along with the 4/5 day expeditions, provide the best opportunities for students to get out of their comfort zones and develop as leaders and team players. She’d also like to thank the Herts Youth Connexions Team for their help, BXM Expeditions, Simply First Aid and all the parents – she says, “The Gold Award is a real team effort!”.
