Concerto Concert – Thursday 28th March

Every year the moment comes when our Year 13 students take to the EGH one final time, as they come towards the end of their time at Owens. Many of them have been involved in concerts and performances since the very start of Year 7, and their wonderful contribution to the musical life of the school was rightly celebrated in style last Thursday evening.

Alongwith over 150 upper school pupils, the concert featured Year 13 students performing as soloists (Robin Day, Sasha Little, Bethany White, Gordon Lee, Sam Scheer, Hannah Blundell, Alice Dadswell, Jade Brooks) and as musical directors (Robin Day, Sam Scheer, Theo Gill) and as instrumentalists/vocalists in Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band, Senior Strings, Chamber Orchestra and Senior Chamber Choir (Natalie Rose, Sophie Ashing, Dan Jack, Dan McMinn, Dorothy Burrowes, Megan Manly, Jessica Hitchcock).

The programme offered an impressive range of musical genres, including concerto movements by Mozart, Walton and Rachmaninov, Gershwin songs, Dvorak’s Rondo for Orchestra, Vivaldi’s ‘Autumn’ from the Four Seasons, Danse Macabre by Saint-Saens, Symphonie Espagnole by Lalo, the Dances from Lully’s ‘Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme’ and Mozart’s Quartet in F major for oboe and strings.

The musicianship and level of virtuosic ability of all the soloists was exceptional, as was the unstinting stamina and support of all the members of the ensembles who played  throughout the evening.

Congratulations to all the performers who played so well and to their musical directors, Ms Bamber, Mr Kelly, Ms Makepeace-Lott, Mr Marshall and Mr Widden.

Our thanks to all those in the Music Department who worked so hard to made the evening such a special occasion and to parents and families who have supported our wonderful students over so many years.
