Winter Concert delights audience!
With almost as many Owens pupils on the EGH stage as parents and friends in the audience, the Winter Concert was a wonderful evening of superb performances by the Senior Chamber Choir, Chamber Orchestra, Senior Choir, Second Band, Close Harmony Group and Symphony Orchestra.
The programme featured an impressive range of styles, including music from stage and screen (‘A Tribute to Henry Mancini’, ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’ and ‘Shadowland from The Lion King), traditional/folk music (‘Ar Hyd y Nos’ and Kate Rusby’s ‘Underneath the Stars’), popular/jazz styles (‘XO’ by Beyonce/John Mayer, Coldplay’s ‘Atlas’ and ‘It Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing’), symphonic works (Haydn’s Symphony No 104 in D major), and the Symphony Orchestra’s masterful and performance of Mussorgsky’s thrilling ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’.
Voices blended beautifully, solo performers shone, instruments were played brilliantly, ensembles were conducted superbly and the level of musical competence, awareness and understanding displayed was brilliant.
Congratulations to all the musicians from across every year group who were involved – some appearing in their very first Owens concert and some appearing in almost every item within the concert!
Our thanks and congratulations to the musical directors on the night (Ms Makepeace-Lott, Ms Bamber, Mr Grimstead, Mr Crossley and Mr Marshall), to our Year 13 student conductors (Robin Day, Theo Gill and Sam Scheer) and to our accompanists (Mr Thompson and Jade Brooks). The concert wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the technical crew and stage crew, the Music Dept staff, Ms Meik, the OSA, and of course our wonderful parents, friends and families.
Many thanks to you all!
