How Are Islington Children Allocated Places?

Dame Alice Owen’s has 200 Year 7 places available each year.
If we receive more than 200 applications (which we usually do), we offer places using our oversubscription criteria, in this order:

1. Looked After / Previously Looked After Children
2. 22 children living closest to the school
3. Brothers or sisters already at the school
4. Up to 10 places for Music Aptitude
5. Up to 65 places for the Academic Test
6. Children of staff
7. Then, anyone else, in order of distance from the school

Children with an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) are also included in the total number of 200.

How the Islington Places Work

We are required to offer at least 20 places to children who live in Islington.
These 20 places are not separate — they are included within the 200 total.

• If 20 or more Islington children already qualify through the normal oversubscription criteria (for example, through sibling, distance, music, or academic categories), then that’s it — we’ve met the 20-place requirement.
  → In this case, we don’t need to use the Islington list at all.
• If fewer than 20 Islington children qualify in the first round, we then look at the Islington lists (academic or music, depending on where the spaces are) to top up to 20 Islington places.
  → For example, if only 16 Islington children get places initially, we’ll then offer places to the next highest-ranked 4 Islington children on the relevant lists.

The Key Point

Being ranked on an Islington list does not automatically mean your child will get a place.
We only use those lists if fewer than 20 Islington children have been allocated places after the first round.
If 20 or more Islington children already have places, the Islington list is not used at all.
