Extra Activities

Our school provides great opportunities outside the classroom with a thriving social and extra-curricular side to Sixth Form life. The Sixth Form Centre provides a Common Room and the Self Access Learning Centre (SALC), an area for silent study, independent work and research. We have a dedicated Sixth Form Dining Hall, where catering is available from 8am-1.35pm, and there are close links with the Old Owen’s Association’s Sports Club in Potters Bar (which one sixth former helpfully described as Owen’s own pub!).

tanzania_2014We also have an active Duke of Edinburgh scheme in operation and run residential trips and journeys abroad and our students have travelled to countries as far afield as India, China and South Africa. Our school also has a link school in Tanzania (see photo left from 2014 trip), to which several trips have been made by upper school students. Departments in the school organise a rich mix of trips at home and abroad including to Berlin and Paris.

Drama and Music are both strengths of our school with regular outstanding productions taking place, for which there are open auditions and in which new students have played leading roles. In the past, our musical productions have included Grease and West Side Story and plays including Shakespeare’s Hamlet. For those wanting to be part of Performing Arts without being on stage, students can be involved in the Tech Crew or help design and produce sets and staging. See our full Music and Drama Programme on our Events page!

Sport is taken seriously at our school and there are a multitude of different sporting clubs that Sixth Formers can join and new students to the Sixth Form in the past have captained the school’s first XI football team. There is the opportunity to join the thriving Old Owens Football Club, which has seven sides catering for all standards and new members are always welcome at the Old Owen’s Cricket Club.

Sixth Formers have the opportunity to participate in debating and editing The Arrow magazine, which is published exclusively by a Sixth Form Team and goes on sale to parents and students. We also have a chess team run coordinated by staff and a variety of extra-curricular activities run by departments including a History Magazine, Art Club.

As a general rule, students are encouraged to and supported with any appropriate extra-curricular activities that they would like to establish at our school.

We encourage Sixth Form students to take an active role in the life of the school and many act as School Prefects, Form Prefects, guide at school events, help in lower school lessons and can mentor younger students.
